Icy weather and a rather unexpected dumping of snow are causing havoc on roads in Greater Manchester. There are long delays on the M56, M60 and M62 motorways this morning (January 9) due to the weather.
Issues include huge tailbacks on the M60 in both directions, all the way from junctions one at Stockport to 11 at Barton. Elsewhere, there are several roads across the region which have become impassable due to snow.
A Met Office weather warning for snow and ice is in force until 11am for parts of the North West including Wigan, where a number of schools have closed. But there has been heavy snowfall in parts of Manchester, Stockport and Trafford this morning – causing major disruption on the region’s roads.
Drivers need to be aware of the following issues:
- M56 severe delays in both directions from junctions four at Wythenshawe to 3A at Princess Parkway due to snow
- M60 severe delays both directions between Barton at junction 11 and Stockport Pyramid at junction one
- M62 eastbound – one lane closed due to overturned vehicle between junctions 19 at Heywood and 20 at Rochdale
- M62 both directions queues due to ice between junctions 11 and 12
- A555 CLOSED both directions from Poynton to Handforth, and westbound to Styal Road
- A56 Chester Road, Trafford impassable due to snow between the M56 and M60 at Stretford
- A560 Altrincham Road, Wythenshawe impassable due to snow between the M56 and A56 Church Street
- A57 Snake Pass just passable due to snow
- A572 Manchester Road, Leigh impassable due to snow between Twist Lane and Church Road, Astley
- A573 Warrington Road, Wigan impassable between Darlington Street and the East Lancs at Golborne
- A577 Wigan Road, Wigan impassable due to snow between Warrington Lane and Atherleigh Way
- A579 Atherleigh Way impassable due to snow between Wigan Road and the East Lancs
- A58 Park Road, Hindley impassable between the Bird I’th HAnd and the A6 at Chequerbent
- A5209 Crow Orchard Road, Standish impassable due to snow between the High Street and Shevington Lane
- A6144 Manchester Road, Partington impassable due to snow from Moss Lane to the M60
- Brooklands Road, Timperley impassable due to snow from Shaftestbury Avenue to Brooklands Station
