Snow tonight LIVE as UK and Yorkshire prepare for big freeze as Met Office issues rare warning

Vast parts of Yorkshire and the rest of the UK are bracing themselves for snow over tonight and Sunday. Hundreds of homes and roads in Yorkshire could be covered in up to 40cm of snow this weekend, the Met Office predicts as a rare amber warning has been issued.

Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, York, Doncaster and surrounding towns and villages are likely to be hit from around 9pm tonight (Saturday, January 4) until midnight on Sunday. There is a ‘severe warning’ for ice too.

Power cuts, mobile phone coverage and transport disruption are also a risk. Those over 65 years old and/or with illnesses are particularly vulnerable.

In Huddersfield, local weatherman Paul Stevens predicts up to 16 inches of snow in elevated places. Mr Stevens said: “Amber warning issued for Kirklees with 5cm in towns, 15-30cm up to 300m and 40cm plus for Scapegoat Hill and higher parts of Kirklees. That’s 12-16 inches of snow for most and 6 inches low ground and centres.”
