A driver was pulled over by police due to speeding and licence plate offences but was arrested for what police found next to him. The incident happened near Llanbedr in Gwynedd between Christmas and New Year.
Officers stopped the vehicle after it was seen speeding. When they spoke to the driver they spotted an axe between the driver’s door and his seat.
This saw the driver arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and taken to Caernarfon police station. He was given a caution.
Police said they had a zero tolerance approach to these offences. But after posting this on social media some questioned whether a caution was a sufficient deterrent.
North Wales Police said: “On Saturday the 28th of December 2024 Dolgellau Policing Team were out on patrol in the Llanbedr area when the officers stopped a vehicle for driving in excess speed and displaying illegal number plates.
“Clearly visible between the driver’s door and seat was an axe therefore the driver was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and conveyed to Caernarfon Custody, where he had a caution for the offence.
“North Wales Police take a zero tolerance approach to individuals found in possession of weapons.”
In response on social media, one person said: “Thank you for apprehending but a caution does not scream zero tolerance.” Another added: “Zero tolerance approach……a caution!!”
