State pensioners born before 1959 set for two free payments worth £9,800

People who qualify for the state pension have been told two benefits could boost their income by £10,000. Pension Credit from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) is worth around £4,200 while Attendance Allowance could hand state pensioners £5,600 each.

Attendance Allowance helps with extra costs if you have a disability or health condition severe enough that you need someone to help look after you. There’s a different way to claim if you’re nearing the end of life.

It’s paid at two different rates and how much you get depends on the level of care that you need because of your disability or health condition. You could get £72.65 or £108.55 a week to help with personal support if you have a physical disability, a mental disability, or a health condition and you’re State Pension age or older (born before 1959).

It does not cover mobility needs. You could get extra Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction if you get Attendance Allowance. Pension Credit gives you extra money to help with your living costs if you’re over State Pension age and on a low income. Pension Credit can also help with housing costs such as ground rent or service charges.

If you are eligible for Pension Credit, this could mean extra weekly money and access to a range of other benefits. Although Pension Credit is means tested, you may still qualify if you have savings or if you own your own home.

It’s worth claiming even if you only qualify for a small amount because Pension Credit unlocks other benefits like a fee TV Licence (for over 75s), NHS dental care and check ups, free sight tests, vouchers, glass and contact lenses and travel costs to and from hospital.

It could also unlock £25 cold weather payments, help towards housing and Council Tax benefit and £300 winter fuel payments.
