State pensioners to get £150 New Year cost of living bonus

Millions of people will be getting a £150 boost to help pay their energy bills over winter. These households will get the Warm Home Discount which cuts bills during the cold winter months.

People to benefit include some of the poorest pensioners barely able to scrape by. Qualifying pensioners will get a £150 discount on their energy payments.

Others who are eligible include people on benefits like Universal Credit who also have high energy costs, such as poorly insulated homes. The Government decides who these people are.

Eligible households should have been sent letters explaining what’s happening. Discounts will continue to be applied during January, bringing a new year cost of living boost for some of the poorest Brits.

The discount is not made as a cash payment but is taken directly off energy bills, helping low-income households to save on how much they pay for gas and electricity during the cold winter months. It’ll either be added as credit to energy accounts for direct debit customers or issued as a voucher for others.

It’s up to energy companies to decide when to apply the Warm Home Discount. This can be any time between October and March. The Government explained: “The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a one-off £150 discount off your electricity bill. If you’re eligible, your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill. The money is not paid to you.

You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible. You can still qualify for the discount if you use a pre-pay or pay as you go electricity meter.

“Your electricity supplier can tell you how you’ll get the discount if you’re eligible, for example a voucher you can use to top up your meter.”
