Strictly Come Dancing star says ‘they were right’ in heartbreaking age admission

Strictly Come Dancing star Annabel Croft stunned viewers in glitzy outfits as she took to the dance floor in 2023.

But she says her daughters Amber, 28, and Lily, 25, were less impressed, and gave the television star a dressing down once she got home. The 58-year-old former tennis player says her children thought she was “too old” to wear some of the outfits.

In particular, Annabel highlights a skirt that she says was “ too short”. However, Annabel admits she is happy her daughters decided to speak up about the costumes.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: “Age is a consideration in how I dress, as my daughters said to me many years ago, ‘Mum, you’re too old to wear that now’. A skirt I was wearing that was too short.

“It was something I wouldn’t have thought twice about, but I probably wouldn’t do that any more because they were right… I’m glad they said it because who else was going to say it to me?”

Annabel, paired with Strictly professional Johannes Radebe, finished fourth. She narrowly missed out on a final which saw Coronation Street actress Ellie Leach finishing ahead of EastEnders star Bobby Brazier and Bad Education’s Layton Williams.

The star took part in Strictly just six months after her late husband, yachtsman Mel Coleman died, aged 60. Ahead of the competition she hoped it would “alleviate” some of the pain she was feeling.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, she said: “When I got the offer I thought, actually, what else am I going to be doing — coming home at 4pm to a dark, empty house, a house Mel built, in the winter?

“Also, I’m an athlete. The idea of using my body to try to alleviate something — the pain, I guess — was appealing.”

She later went on to say the show gave her “so much light”. She added: “It’s been the most life-changing and extraordinary experience of my life. Johannes, you have been absolutely extraordinary. You have given me a reason to get out of bed and come and dance with you, distract me and to heal me.”
