A superfood that can provide a rich source of protein for vegetarians could also aid in weight reduction and fat loss.
Research suggests that the consumption of tofu or soy protein can help manage body weight, decrease fat, and enhance insulin resistance, according to a recent report.
Tofu is considered a ‘complete’ protein source as it contains all nine essential amino acids and is nutrient-dense, potentially offering numerous health benefits, as reported by BBC Good Food.
These benefits may include assistance with peri-menopausal symptoms, heart health, cholesterol management, blood sugar control, bone health, and possibly reducing the risk of certain cancers.

Nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert stated that while many people associate lean protein with meat and fish, it’s not necessary to consume meat to get sufficient protein. Speaking to the Telegraph, Rhiannon said: “While people often think of white meat and fish when referring to lean protein, it’s also important to note that you do not have to eat meat to get enough protein in your diet,” reports Surrey Live.
She added that consuming more plant-based protein also means ingesting significantly higher amounts of fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants found in plants.
Tofu is made by coagulating soy milk and forming it into blocks, explains WeightWatchers, noting that compared to other legumes, soy has more unsaturated fat and high-quality protein.
The potential health benefits of tofu were also highlighted, including the possibility that it could reduce cholesterol levels, the risk of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes when included in a plant-based diet.

A 2015 study analysed the food consumption of over 130,000 men and women in the US and estimated that tofu and soy could have contributed to a weight loss of 2.5 pounds over four years.
WeightWatchers further suggested that tofu could aid weight loss as it is low in calories and high in protein, helping individuals feel satiated for longer periods.
BBC Good Food pointed out another study which showed that diabetic post-menopausal women who consumed isolated soy protein saw a decrease in fasting insulin levels and resistance, and an improvement in their cholesterol management.
However, the publication also acknowledged that subsequent studies have yielded more varied results, indicating that further research is necessary to fully explore this topic.
