Swansea school evacuated after fire

A school was evacuated after a fire began inside a classroom’s storage cupboard. Fire crews attended Sketty Primary School in Swansea on Wednesday, January 8, following reports of an incident.

Crews from Swansea west and Swansea central attended the school to deal with the fire, and it was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system and one hose reel jet.

Firefighters remained at the scene for just under an hour. The school, located at Llwyn Mawr Close in Sketty, is open as normal on Thursday with no disruption, a spokesperson confirmed. For the latest Swansea news, sign up to our newsletter here.

A statement from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service read: “At 2.55pm on Wednesday, January 8, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Swansea West and Swansea Central fire stations were called to an incident at Sketty primary school.

Crews responded to a small fire confined to a storage cupboard in a classroom on the first floor of a two-storey building. The fire was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system and one hose reel jet, two breathing apparatus sets, one thermal imaging camera and two positive pressure ventilation fans. Crews left the scene at 3.48pm.”

A spokesperson for Sketty Primary School added: “All pupils and staff quickly and safely left the building as per our fire drill.
