Teenager knifed in Tameside as Tesco Express taped off by police

A 17-year-old boy is in hospital after being knifed in Tameside. Police were called to Oldham Road in Ashton-under-Lyne following reports of a stabbing at a Tesco Express store.

The boy was raced to hospital with ‘serious injuries’, police said. No arrests have been made. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said additional officers will be deployed as enquiries are conducted.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses – or anyone with information. Images showed officers inside the store as darkness fell.

In a statement, the force said: “At 6pm this evening (Wednesday 1 January 2025) we were called to reports of a stabbing on Oldham Road in Ashton-under-Lyne.

“Emergency services attended and a 17-year-old male was taken to hospital with serious injuries. At this stage, no arrests have been made but an investigation is underway.

Detective Sergeant Steve Carroll from GMP’s Tameside division said: “Our investigation is in the early stages but we are following several lines of enquiry to establish the timeline of events which led to this male being injured tonight.

“We have deployed additional officers to the area whilst we conduct further enquiries, if you have any concerns or some information you would like to share, please do not hesitate to speak to them. No matter how small the information may seem, it could be crucial to our investigation.

“We are urging anyone who was in the area this evening, or has any information that will assist our enquiries, comes forward and speak with police by either speaking to local officers in the area or by calling 0161 856 9262 or online on gmp.police.uk.”
