Teenagers killed in New Year’s Day horror crash named and pictured

Two teenagers killed in a car crash in Yorkshire on New Year’s Day have been named.

William Herbert, 16, and from Howden, and Olly Mitchell, 18 and from Ellerton, were both killed in a car crash in Preston on New Year’s Day. Humberside Police say their families are currently being supported by specialist officers.

At around 1.20pm on January 1, a grey Volkswagen Golf was travelling along Staithes Road away from Preston when it crashed into a black Vauxhall Grandland travelling towards Preston. The emergency services rushed to the crash, but William was pronounced dead at the scene.

Olly later died in hospital from his injuries. Two other passengers also suffered serious injuries. A 16-year-old girl is in a critical but stable condition while a 17-year-old boy remains in a serious but stable condition.

A passenger in the Vauxhall, a 62-year-old man, was taken to hospital to receive treatment for injuries which are no longer life-threatening. The driver, a 34-year-old woman sustained an injury to her arm and received treatment while two other passengers suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested on January 1 on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

Humberside Police said: “Two teenagers who died in a collision in Preston on Wednesday 1 January have been named by their families as 16-year-old William Herbert from Howden, and 18-year-old Olly Mitchell from Ellerton, East Riding of Yorkshire.

“Their families continue to be supported by specialist trained officers and both families have asked for their privacy at this extremely difficult time.”
