Lorries and buses became stranded on Park Road in Dingle due to snowfall overnight
Lorries that were delivering goods to supermarkets in south Liverpool were stranded this morning as the wintry weather made the final stretch of their journeys impossible. Park Road in Dingle was treacherous in the Sunday morning snow and a number of heavy goods vehicle drivers were left with no choice but to stop on the side of the road.
Two lorries delivering goods to Tesco, as well as an Aldi lorry and a number of buses, became stranded on Park Road, with vehicles parked up on either side of the road. A gritter returned to the area at around 9am to offer further assistance, as the lorry and bus drivers waited until they were able to move again.
Heavy snow has fallen over Merseyside overnight, with road closures and travel delays affecting large parts of the region. The Met Office had issued an amber warning for snow from late on Saturday, and that has proven correct in Liverpool and the surrounding city region. Liverpool City Council’s Safety Advisory Group has met and is set to hold a further meeting at noon ahead of the 4.30pm kick-off at Anfield, where Liverpool are due to face Manchester United. Follow updates on that here.
Liverpool FC have tweeted the following: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield. At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions. We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds.”

Elsewhere in the city, Merseyside Police issued a warning about conditions on Childwall Valley Road. And Liverpool John Lennon Airport tweeted to confirm the runway was closed temporarily. The airport later confirmed its runway reopened at 10.15am. A spokesperson for the airport said: “The runway will be open at 10:15, there are delays to flights so please contact your airline directly.”
Merseyrail told the ECHO services were earlier suspended on the line between Rock Ferry and Ellesmere Port and Chester, with rail replacement buses operating. National Rail have confirmed that trains between Liverpool Lime Street and London Euston are affected due to a “problem at the depot”. The disruption is expected to last until at least midday with trains to and from Liverpool affected.
