Yorkshire has, in our opinion, got the best culinary scene in the whole of the UK.
From serial award-winners to those venues out in the sticks serving unbeatable roast dinners. In a hopeful attempt to display some of our own knowledge and authenticity we’ve put together our selection of editorial’s favourite Yorkshire restaurants and places to go out to eat (not every entry will fit the conventional ‘restaurant’ description…just go with it).
In a similar fashion to our Yorkshire pub recommendations article, from across the team, with us all based well across the region, we’ve submitted our choices with a few lines telling you why we love them so much. We have our fingers firmly crossed that you believe you know what we are talking about.
The list below features suggestions from major cities such as Sheffield, Leeds and York as well as some hidden gems where you can enjoy Yorkshire’s rural delights.
Take a scroll and see which venue takes your fancy. Don’t forget, you can tell us your favourite Yorkshire pub by commenting on this article or by telling us on Facebook.
Hooyah Burgers
78 Albion Street, Leeds, LS1 6AD
Hooyah Burgers in Leeds
It is a small but mighty restaurant that claims to have the best burgers in Leeds and I agree that it does after designing my own two four oz burgers with a seedless brioche bun with American cheese, bacon and lettuce. It has two floors for seating areas and was surprisingly spacious inside despite its exterior appearance. The staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable of the menu and were eager to answer any questions.

Kitchen Howden
42 Bridgegate, Howden, Goole, DN14 7AB
The best and biggest sandwiches around, beautifully packed boards and special breakfast flatbreads.
Suggestion from Tom Kershaw
Imrans
91 – 95 Leymoor Road, Longwood, Golcar, Huddersfield, HD3 4SJ
Imrans is a tiny Indian takeaway which is tucked away on a side street in Golcar, Huddersfield, but is well known to locals because the food is so good and the prices competitive. Chicken tikka masala is the top seller but there’s plenty more on the menu.
The food is always fresh and is consistently of a high quality.
Suggestion from Andrew Robinson
Jinnah
Leeds Road, Bradford, BD1 5BL
Jinnah, which has other branches across Yorkshire, serves up exceptional curries in an ornate establishment. The restaurant alone is a sight to behold with its decadent interior design. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

Bettys Café Tea Rooms
Harrogate
If there is one place you must visit, it must be the famous Bettys in Harrogate. Known for serving all kinds of food, the desserts are one to make room for – especially the chocolate eclairs. Make sure you go before and after school holidays to avoid the large queue to get in.

Olive Tree Brasserie
8 S Parade, Leeds, LS1 5QX
Olive Tree Brasserie’s roast options include a chicken roast, pork roast, beef roast and plant-based roast
Opened at the end of 2023. The restaurant’s aim was to bring a modern take on Greek cuisine with the South Parade restaurant looking to build on the success experienced in Lytham, Chester, and Stockton Heath. The objective has been achieved.
The food has Greek inspiration at its core, with a focus on sustainability and an extensive range of veggie and vegan options with 40 per cent of their menu being plant-based. Meze and main course highlights include Mediterranean favourites such as the popular lamb kleftiko, moussaka, and dolmades.
There’s even a Sunday roast…with a Mediterranean twist.

Reubens
34 Bradford Road, Brighouse, HD6 1RW
Reubens Deli and Coffee Shop in Brighouse town centre is serving up big and delicious New York-style deli sarnies.
Makes a welcome change to your bog-standard sandwiches and with some interesting sarnie names on the menu, from Hella Bella to Meatball Mayhem.
Suggestion by Andrew Robinson
Warton Arms
Hull Road, Woodmansey, Beverley, HU17 0TH
This gorgeous, cosy pub restaurant with thatch roof is ideal for a hearty winter meal with family or friends and is super dog friendly too – they even provide doggy treats. Then in summer, it’s an ideal place to dine alfresco where there is outdoor seating aplenty and cosy outdoor dining pods.

Livin’Italy
Granary Wharf, Wharf Approach, Leeds, LS1 4BR
The quaint restaurant, based in the Leeds Train Station railway arches, is probably my favourite Italian in Yorkshire (although there are some amazing alternatives). With traditional dishes and pizza, you really can’t go wrong. If you can fancy a bit of celeb spotting, we’ve also seen the Leeds United squad enjoy meals there on occasion.

The Mowbray Arms in Thirsk
Market Place, Thirsk, YO7 1ET
A place that should be known for its comfort food at its best and at an amazing price. The staff are very welcoming and informative about the food they serve. The portions are medium-sized but perfect to give you the energy needed to explore the town.

Turntable Coffee and Vinyl
New Street, Huddersfield, HD1 2BQ
The Turntable Coffee and Vinyl is in Huddersfield’s New Street
Not quite fitting the restaurant remit but a great place in Huddersfield town centre to enjoy the day slip away. The menu at the Turntable includes the perfect selection of cafe food. There’s all-day breakfast options which include pastries, yoghurt and crumpets.
The soundtrack features Blondie, Avril Lavigne and Robbie Williams – the music coming courtesy of a record player.

House of Fu
15-19 The Headrow, Leeds city centre, LS1 6PU
It’s a really lovely atmosphere inside – busy but not crowded. Decor is food and the food is amazing. I’ve been a couple of times and always opt for the spicy miso tantanmen – the crunchy chilli oil gives it a kick. Great for a family meal, a date or catch up with friends and family.

Manjaros
Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 3RF
The home of the parmos and a place that has rightly been named ‘the king’ for making them.
In my opinion if you want a parmo, you have to come to Middlesborough to get one. and is a great value for money for the size parmo you get!

Bengal Brasserie
Roundhay Road, Roundhay, Leeds, LS8 4BA
My old haunt when I lived in the Chapel Allerton area. Easily one of the best curry houses in Yorkshire…and the best thing? There’s other branches in Leeds, including a new Moortown offering, and the region if the Roundhay one is a little of a trek.

Brewed
38 King Street, Huddersfield, HD1 2QT
Brewed, a cafe in King Street, Huddersfield
Brewed might sound like a coffee house but it’s so much more. You can get curry as well as cakes, and the curry I ordered was divine – and inexpensive.
I paid £3 for a chicken curry and £2 for some Indian flatbread. The curry had a perfect chilli kick and came with the perfect amount of ‘sauce’.
All in all, seriously good value for money. And a nice ambience to boot.

Drake’s Fish and Chips
97 Low Petergate, York, YO1 7HY
A great spot to sit inside after a rest trekking through the York city centre crowds. One of the best chippies in the city. There’s a cafe or you can take out, grab a bench and admire the cathedral while you feast on your fish and chips.

Sweet Basil Valley
1 Green Lane, Yeadon, Rawdon, Leeds LS19 7BY
It’s a fantastic Chinese and Thai restaurant which is well decorated and serves some fantastic food. Service there is always great and it’s got a wide menu, meaning there’s something for everyone to eat, and with everything tasting good anyway it makes for a brilliant meal out.

Silversmiths
111 Arundel Street, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield, S1 2NT
Silversmiths in Sheffield
A perfect place for a Sunday roast and plenty of meats to choose from instead of the usual chicken and beef. The warm and cosy environment is perfect for a chilled meal with family and friends before retiring for the night or seeing a show. Just one thing – don’t be scared to ask for more gravy for £1 extra.

Fourth Floor Brasserie and Bar at Harvey Nichols Leeds
Harvey Nichols, 111 Briggate, Leeds, LS1 6AZ
Very much offers a sense of glam. You can also enjoy stunning views of Leeds city centre. Their Sunday roast is one of the best in Leeds.

315 Bar and Restaurant
315 Wakefield Road, Lepton, Huddersfield, HD8 0LX
Innovative menu and great drinks in a scenic setting. Everything cooked to perfection by talented chefs and served by friendly staff.

Papa’s Fish and Chips
Foreshore Road, Scarborough, YO11 1PB
Sausage, chips and a tub of gravy from Papas Fish and Chips on the beach in Scarborough
There is no place better than to get fish and chips right on the seaside than the award-winning Papa’s Fish and Chips. It’s delicious chunky chips and sausages are just what you need to start or end your perfect day in Scarborough. Be warned that it is very popular and you might end up in a large queue – as they are just that good.

The Beverley Arms
25 N Bar Within, Beverley, HU17 8DD
This gem in the heart of Beverley town centre feels like a luxury treat but without the luxury price tag. It’s also dog friendly, and while you have to sit outside with your furry friend, you’re still undercover and there are heaters and blankets to keep you cosy. Inside it’s the ideal place for a meal out with friends in gorgeous surroundings.
Suggestion by Caroline Hemmingham
Mother Hubbard’s
Harehills Road, Harehills, Leeds, LS8 5PB
Mother Hubbard’s is based in the heart of Harehills
Once again, reiterating the point that not every single entry is, or even needs to be, a traditional ‘restaurant’ is Mother Hubbard’s. During my time in Leeds, it was my local chippy and, as well as serving all the favourites you’d expect, it is my tip because of how it really felt like a focal point of the Harehills community.
There’s an indoor cafe area or, of course, you can take your tea home with you.

Indian House
53 King Street, Huddersfield, HD1 2PZ
I really rated this ‘cute and quirky’ Indian restaurant in the centre of Huddersfield. Indian House in King Street, Huddersfield has garnered plenty of praise for its ‘authentically Indian’ street food.
A good place to step out of your comfort zone and try something a little different such as vada pav, a veggie patty in a bread bun.
Suggestion by Andrew Robinson
Lupe’s Cantina
204 Cardigan Road, Burley, Leeds, LS6 1LF
I absolutely love Mexican cuisine and, undoubtedly, Lupe’s serves some of the very best in Yorkshire. The menu features real authentic dishes with many coming with a big kick. This can all be washed down with a wide selection of cocktails.
