It seems high-end car enthusiasts could be gearing up for a hit to the wallet as 59 luxury models are eyed for a £2,000 hike in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) under new plans by the government.
Specifically targeted are the swanky new speedsters emitting over 255g/km of CO2 which will see their owners shelling out an additional £2,745 annually, rocketing the duty up to £5,490.
Starting from April 2025, road tax rates are on the up aligned with inflation. Nevertheless, i’s the fresh-off-the-lot cars that’ll feel the burn, especially those crossing the CO2 emissions threshold of 75g/km.
This is all part of a push toward eco-friendlier motoring; the government is looking to double down on first-year road tax rates for those in the higher CO2 bands – a move reckoned to bag the Treasury an extra £400 million next year and a predicted climb to £1.7 billion by 2030.
The 2024 budget shed light on the VED Expensive Car Supplement threshold’s squeeze on buyers of zero-emission cars, hinting at a potential forthcoming break: “The government recognises the disproportionate impact of the current VED Expensive Car Supplement threshold for those purchasing zero-emission cars and will consider raising the threshold for zero-emission cars only at a future fiscal event, to make it easier to buy electric cars.”
