The city centre barbershop that lets customers pay what they can for a haircut this month

A popular barbershop in the Northern Quarter is letting customers pay as much or little as they can for haircuts this month. Jefe’s Barbers on Stevenson Square has brought in the scheme to help people who are struggling with funds during this time of the year.

The store took to social media to announce the deal, with a heartfelt message from the owner saying: “Yes! It says what it says. For the rest of Jan you will be able to get a haircut from us and pay whatever you can.

“We understand that a lot of people put themselves out in December. January can be a bit testing. It’s only a little but we hope we help a lot.”

Jefe’s is owned by former basketball player turned barber, Jerelle Okoro and this isn’t the first time the shop has placed provisions to help struggling clients. In 2023, the store made headlines when it offered £5 haircuts to help those struggling through the cost of living crisis.

Jerelle launched Jefe’s Barbers after being frustrated with how other barbers treated him

In 2022, when the store opened, Jerelle launched the business as the first ever subscription barber shop. Also a hair stylist to celebrities, Jerelle has cut hair for the likes of YouTube boxers Swarms and Fuhad, football reporter Carl Anka and The Voice’s Okulaja.

In 2020 he hung up his basketball sneakers and decided to focus on barbering after his own experiences fell short of what he wanted. Speaking to the MEN he said that he always wanted his business to feel ‘more of a family hub than a barbershop’.
