The fairytale village 90 minutes from London named one of UK’s prettiest

If you’re already dreaming of escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, a weekend getaway to a peaceful village is a great option. Thankfully, Londoners have many options right on their doorstep.

Dedham, Essex, is a picturesque town just 90 minutes from London, offering the perfect English getaway with its stunning landscapes, fine pub dining and country walks. The town is renowned for being part of ‘Constable Country’, named after the celebrated British landscape artist John Constable, who painted much of the scenery over 180 years ago, which remains largely unchanged today.

A stroll along the River Stour’s water meadows to the charming hamlet of Flatford is a must-do, or for a different perspective, hire a boat from Dedham Boathouse and row down the river. Culture enthusiasts should not miss The Munnings Art Museum, home to one of the largest collections of Sir Alfred Munnings’ horse paintings.

If you’re just looking for a relaxing stroll, simply enjoy the quaint atmosphere of Dedham itself, with its Georgian-fronted houses, 15th-century church and delightful boutiques. The Dedham Art and Craft Centre, brimming with local artists’ works, is particularly noteworthy.

For accommodation, The Sun Inn on the High Street, with its bright yellow walls, is a popular choice among visitors. One guest couldn’t hide their delight, describing the charming coaching inn as a “gem” and hailed the service as “wonderful, welcoming and caring.”

Foodies will be spoilt for choice in Dedham with its array of traditional pubs serving up fine English grub. If it’s a robust Sunday roast you’re craving, make a beeline for the Dedham Boatyard to sample their delicious sandwiches, or even a Sunday Roast. For those with a sweet tooth, The Essex Rose Tea Room is your go-to for an iconic English afternoon tea experience.

Getting to Dedham is a breeze – if you’re driving, take the A12 off Junction 28 of the M25 and you’ll be there in roughly an hour and 15 minutes. By train, take the Greater Anglia service from Liverpool Street towards Ipswich. It’s a swift 1 hour and 10-minute journey to Manningtree station, followed by a brief 15-minute bus journey right into the heart of Dedham.
