The quaint seaside town with an unexpected claim to fame perfect for a visit all year round

A charming UK seaside town, largely unknown to Brits, has been named as the top spot for fossil hunting in the country. Walton-on-the-Naze, despite being unfamiliar to 70 per cent of the population according to the Mirror, is a quaint resort boasting sandy beaches, narrow streets and a family-friendly vibe.

The town, located just under two hours from central London, is known for its rich fossil finds and stunning coastal scenery, is usually packed with visitors throughout the summer months for good reason. However, if a peaceful walk and some fossil hunting sounds up your street, winter could be the best time to visit.

During summer, Walton-on-the-Naze transforms into a sunny seaside destination. In 2023, it was honoured with a Keep Britain Tidy Seaside Award, and its pier underwent a full refurbishment, now featuring attractions like amusement rides, an arcade, and bowling.

Walton-on-the-Naze stands out as a seaside town rather than a commercialised resort, favouring independent shops that add to its local charm. Its sandy beach houses over 1,000 huts available for hire for getaways and special occasions.

But beyond being a good place for a sunny day out, Walton-on-the-Naze is home to some incredible historical sites including the Red Crag formation. This formation is a treasure trove of Paleogene fossils, including a megalodon shark tooth found in 2023, reports Essex Live.

Winter is the perfect time for fossil hunting as the tides reveal more prehistoric secrets hidden in the rocks. The town’s northern edge features rapidly eroding cliffs known as The Naze, where fossil-rich clays and sands expose evidence of life from around 54 million years ago. Thanks to these eroding cliffs, the coastline constantly replenishes with loose material on the beach, often revealing fossils like shark teeth and pyritised twigs.

Overlooking the beach from the car park stands the 86-foot octagonal Naze Tower. Built in 1720, this grade II* listed tower now serves as a six-floor gallery.

A spiral staircase of 111 steps leads up the tower, with a tea room at the top offering refreshments for those who make the climb. Walton-on-the-Naze is renowned as a family seaside resort with sandy beaches, seafront gardens and charming narrow streets.
