The quaint village near the end of the Tube that’s the only part of London outside M25

Londoners are spoilt for choice when it comes to hidden gems in the city, and North Ockenden is one such treasure – despite being pretty far from the centre, that is.

This charming little village, nestled in the borough of Havering and outside the M25, offers a taste of the countryside right on your doorstep.

There’s some debate about whether this delightful spot should be classed as part of Essex rather than London – a contentious issue that could also apply to places like Croydon (Surrey) or Bexleyheath (Kent). But let’s not get into that right now.

If you’re unfamiliar with North Ockendon, prepare to be enchanted. Expect fields, quaint cottages and local charm aplenty in this small but special corner of the city.

Situated just three miles from West Horndon in Brentwood, the village is home to only a handful of residents. With such a small population, there’s just one pub in this rural London idyll.

But what North Ockendon lacks in size, it more than makes up for in history. The village boasts a wealth of historical landmarks, some dating back as far as 1175.

The church of St Mary Magdalene, with features from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, is a particular highlight. And it’s not the only piece of history you’ll find here.

The simple cottages dotted around the village date from 1700. No village would be complete without a bakehouse, and North Ockendon’s own 17th-century version still stands today.

Adding to the allure of the village is a medieval moat, a popular spot for local fishing enthusiasts. Hall Farm also offers a charming flower nursery for those in search of rustic beauty.

It’s highly recommended to bring a bike and enjoy the great outdoors when visiting this part of Greater London. So, if you’re ever weary of the typical London sights, why not venture to the outskirts?

You might uncover a side of the city you never knew was there.
