Thousands in East London borough to get £50 council tax reduction

Thousands of low-income households across Havering are set to benefit from a council tax reduction as part of a support scheme.

The £50 reduction has been credited to over 3,000 single-parent households in the borough, funded through the Household Support Fund. The initiative aims to provide financial assistance during the winter months to vulnerable families.

Single parents who currently receive Council Tax Support will see the reduction automatically applied to their next bill, with no action required on their part. The council has specified that the reduction is non-refundable and cannot be transferred or used against other debts.

Council Leader Ray Morgon said: “This Council tax reduction is just one of the many ways we’re supporting our most vulnerable residents during these challenging times,” he said. “While the council continues to face its own financial pressures, we remain committed to doing all we can to protect and assist those in need across the borough.”

Recipients with questions about the scheme are being directed to complete the Council Tax enquiry form for further assistance.

The Council is also continuing to help residents with the rising cost of living through other ongoing initiatives. These include:

  • Havering Helps : The Emergency Assistance Scheme provides essential support to residents in urgent financial need, helping with basics such as food, heating, and household appliances.
  • Warm Spaces A network of warm spaces across the borough, including libraries and community centres, where residents can access heated, welcoming environments free of charge.
  • Energy Doctors Programme : This free service will help residents reduce energy costs through expert advice and small home repairs, potentially saving households up to £209 annually
