Three casualties in M60 horror crash as car sets on fire

A car has caught fire following a horror crash on the M60 which left three people being assessed by paramedics.

The emergency services were called to the clockwise carriageway of the motorway just before 8pm today (Friday, January 3) to reports of a crash. Firefighters said three vehicles had been involved in a collision between junction 22 near Hollinwood, Oldham and junction 23 at Ashton-under-Lyne.

Shocking images from the scene showed one car ablaze. Another car appeared to have crashed into the central reservation, while another vehicle was facing the wrong way having been badly damaged.

The fire service said firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. Three casualties were ‘transferred to the care of North West Ambulance Service’, a statement said.

The exact nature of their condition is not currently known. The motorway is expected to remain closed for some time, with a diversion in place.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly before 8pm this evening (Friday 3 December), three fire engines from Hollins, Chadderton and Ashton Fire Stations, along with the Enhanced Rescue Unit from Ashton, were called to attend an incident on the M60.

“Crews worked quickly to extinguish a car which had set on fire following a road traffic collision involving three vehicles. Three casualties were transferred to the care of North West Ambulance Service.

“Firefighters worked alongside Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe, before departing after approximately 45 minutes at the scene.”
