‘Touch and go’ for stranded Tan Hill guests as news of baby breaks

Ten guests remain stranded at Tan Hill Inn in North Yorkshire as they were told they had missed some important milestones.

Guests trapped in Britain’s highest pub since Saturday evening were finally been rescued after two snowploughs managed to reach them. Two farmers led a convoy from the pub along a twisting moorland road to safety on Tuesday afternoon.

However, four guests, including two German tourists and dog Agatha, decided not to risk the journey and stayed behind with the pub’s six staff.

And the pub has given an update – with one staff member missing her daughter giving birth. And they revealed they had been brought fresh supplies by Aldi.

On Wednesday night they said: “We were preparing ourselves for an evening without Malbec and breakfast without sausages when we had a surprise visit from a snowplough in shining armour!

Supplies arriving at Tan Hill Inn

“Supermarket chain Aldi UK had heard of our red wine and banger shortage and hired a local contractor with a tractor to bring us supplies. The mercy mission was driven by Harry, a farmer from Leyburn in Wensleydale, who said it was “touch and go” but smashed his way through the last miles to us.

“Despite snowploughs escorting most guests from the Tan Hill Inn to safety yesterday, ten of us, including two German guests, remain stranded as high winds and drifting snow swiftly closed the road to Reeth behind the convoy.

“Eva and Matthias from Bavaria tried to drive out along the ploughed road tonight but failed and are back with us, safe and sound.

“We are hoping that North Yorkshire Council will try to get through tomorrow – we’re missing our families. Barmaid Kelly missed her daughter’s 18th birthday yesterday and today housekeeper Babs was told she had a new grandchild: baby Amelia, 6lb 9oz. Hello Amelia!

“Until then it’s back to the Yorkshire Dales version of Monopoly (we raided the shop stock for it)! If we get out of here tomorrow we will change staff and hope for normal service and operation to resume as soon as possible or Friday – but we will post and let you know when we are open.”
