Tribute paid to ‘grandpa with thirst for adventure’ who died near Lichfield in three-vehicle crash

The family of a man killed in a three-vehicle crash in Staffordshire just days before Christmas have paid tribute to a ‘beloved husband, devoted father and besotted grandpa’. Mark Lucas was driving his black Ford Ranger pick-up truck along Watling Street in Weeford, between Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield on Thursday (December 19), when it was involved in a crash.

His vehicle collided with a blue Valtra tractor and a yellow articulated Volvo lorry at around 4.50pm. Despite being given life support, first by bystanders and then advanced support by paramedics, nothing could be done to save the 64-year-old.

The drivers of the tractor and lorry stayed at the scene and were not injured. Now Mark’s family have issued a photo of the Shropshire man along with a moving tribute saying he was ‘dedicated to his family and friends’.

The family said: “He was a true outdoorsman, he had a thirst for adventure and was never happier than with his family on his boat, exploring in his Land Rover or out shooting in the fields.

“Always the first to help others, Mark will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and endless optimism that was infectious to all that knew him.

“The void that he leaves behind in our lives is too vast to put into words and too deep to ever be filled. We will always miss him.”

Staffordshire Police confirmed specially trained officers are continuing to support his family at this time. It is appealing for anyone to witness the incident to come forward.

A spokesman for the force said: “The drivers of the lorry and the tractor were not injured and stayed at the scene. We are still keen to speak to anyone who was travelling in the area at the time, particularly those who might have seen the vehicles before the collision and those with dashcam footage that could help investigators.
