An Uber Eats delivery cyclist was arrested after being pulled over on a busy east Manchester road. Officers spotted the rider along Hyde Road, in Gorton, on Thursday (January 16).
Police grew concerned about the bike being used after it was seen travelling at 35mph on an uphill stretch of the road. The cyclist was not pedalling at the time, according to Greater Manchester Police.
The vehicle was found to be an electric-powered bike. As it was capable of travelling at more than 15.5mph, the cyclist was required to have a licence and insurance for it.
GMP says that the Uber delivery rider had neither of those things. Officers spoke to the cyclist and searched them, before discovering a quantity of cannabis.
After testing positive for driving under the influence of cannabis, the rider was arrested. A GMP Traffic spokesperson said: “Riding in front of Central Vehicle Unit patrol on Hyde Rd at 35mph and up hill without pedalling, makes this electric powered bike a motor vehicle.
“Requires insurance, licence, mot etc. Uber rider had none but did have some cannabis. Arrested for all plus failing the roadside drug test.”
