UK set for -16C snow on Saturday and Sunday with eight cities battered

Eight cities in the UK face snowfall on Saturday and Sunday as the UK shivers in a -16C cold freeze. As we head further away from Christmas, fresh snowfall is being predicted for swathes of the country across January 11 and January 12.

The South of England, Midlands, North England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland are all at risk, WX Charts charts and maps – which are projected using Met Desk data – shows. Southampton, Cardiff, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Belfast and Inverness are most at-risk.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the BBC weather team says: “Today will continue cold with snow showers in northern Scotland. Scattered snow showers are also likely in Northern Ireland, Wales and parts of western England early on. Bright and dry elsewhere.

“Tonight will be clear and cold for most. Snow showers for far northern Scotland early in the night will soon diminish, leaving clear spells. Clouds and rain will move into the far south-west later.” The Friday (January 10) outlook adds: “Tomorrow, rain will move across the south-west, bringing a chance of snow. Mainly dry elsewhere, though it gradually turn cloudier from the south-west.”

The outlook for Saturday to Monday, which spans January 11 to January 13, adds on the BBC website: “Saturday will be a partly cloudy and mainly dry day, but there will be hill snow in Scotland. Wintry sunshine for much of England and Wales.

“A few patches of rain in the north on Sunday, but drier and brighter in the south. It will turn milder over the weekend. Monday will continue cloudy in the north and west with rain in the far north-west. Drier and brighter south and east.”

Temperatures will fall into negative double figures in the coldest areas during the next few nights and a few locations may see minimum temperatures as low as minus 16 Celsius, the Met Office said.
