Temperatures are expected to plummet across the UK, with Scotland bearing the brunt of the cold snap. The mercury is forecast to struggle to rise above a chilly -1C, while the Scottish Highlands could see temperatures drop as low as -3C.

The north west, north east, and Yorkshire and the Humber regions will experience temperatures ranging from -1C to 2C. London, the south east, and south west will fare slightly better, but temperatures will still only reach a dismal 3C.

The cold spell shows no signs of abating, with weather maps predicting that the Scottish Highlands could see temperatures plummet to -10C by 6pm on Saturday, January 25. Other parts of Scotland will hover around -5C, while London, the south east, and south west will drop below freezing.

Only parts of the south west are expected to remain above freezing. The Met Office has warned of an “unsettled and windier than average period” driven by a “dominant flow from the Atlantic”, leading to bands of rain and stronger winds at times.
