A raft of fresh weather warnings for snow have been issued up and down the country after several areas were blanketed by freezing flurries overnight.
According to the Met Office, at least nine regions are bracing for further travel chaos today, with heavy snowfall and icy patches making for treacherous conditions that will impact roads, railways, buses and trains. Injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are also to be expected across in almost every region hit.
Across northern Scotland until midnight tonight, disruption from sleet and snow showers will continue, while some areas of Northern Ireland will be impacted until 11am this morning. Another yellow weather warning for “freezing fog” in the region will make travel conditions difficult in places, the forecaster warned.

In Wales, the northwest and southwest of England, showers – mostly of rain and sleet at low levels and near coasts – as well as snow inland and over higher ground, are set to bring delays and make driving conditions dangerous. The warning, in place until 11am this morning, adds: “Roads are wet and cold across Cornwall following earlier rain and snow.
With many surfaces falling below freezing, this will lead to some icy stretches on untreated surfaces, while a few cm of fresh snow could affect some areas, mainly places above about 100 metres.” Moving across to London and the southeast, the Met Office warned that after a bout of rain and snow, several cold wet surfaces are likely to freeze, producing icy conditions in places – which are likely to increase the chance of accidents and injuries.
It said: “While some surfaces may dry out before they freeze, it is likely that many untreated surfaces may become icy and hazardous into Thursday morning. This will tend to happen sooner in the west, some eastern areas perhaps marginal for freezing.”
It comes as forecasters anticipated the mercury would sink to as low as -16C on Thursday evening and overnight. Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasire said: “Through the day, it remains cold wherever you are after a severe frost overnight. Temperatures [will average] 2-4C, and sub-zero where you see lying snow. Through [Thursday] evening, and overnight, temperatures will fall even lower. We could see temperatures across the snowfields of Scotland, down towards the far north of England, around -14C to -16C.”
