UK warning over dog treats linked to ‘werewolf syndrome’ – full list

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is warning dog owners against giving their pets certain dog treats following alerts from the European Union (EU) about a potential connection to severe behavioural changes. The EU has raised concerns that these products may be associated with what’s being termed ‘werewolf syndrome’.

Symptoms observed include panic attacks, aggression, spasms, epileptic fits and in some instances, death. While there has been no confirmed distribution of these chews in the UK, nor any reported cases, vigilance is advised amid fears consumers may purchase the treats online.

Tina Potter, Head of Incidents at the Food Standards Agency, said: “While there is no confirmed distribution of affected products to the UK, there is the possibility that some consumers may have purchased these online from international sellers.

“No unsafe dog chews have been identified but, based on international investigations so far, we are advising dog owners to avoid feeding the affected chews to dogs as a precaution. There is no evidence to suggest these products present any risk to human health.”

Dog owners who have given the implicated chews to their pets are urged to cease immediately. If your dog appears unwell and has consumed any of the listed dog chews, it is crucial to seek veterinary advice and inform the vet about the specific foods and treats your dog has ingested.

Vets are being urged to be vigilant for symptoms in dogs that come into their surgeries, particularly if they may be linked to the consumption of these chews, which have a long shelf life and could have been purchased several months ago, reports Wales Online.

Relevant symptoms include:

  • sudden behavioural changes such as howling, crying, aggression
  • epileptic-type seizures

If vets suspect cases associated with dog chews, they can report them through the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s (APHA) Small Animal Surveillance.
