Brits are bracing for a staggering 60 hours of snowfall in the coming days as temperatures plummet. Weather maps from WX Charts on New Year’s Day predict snowfall beginning at 6am on Sunday, January 5, and continuing until 6pm on Tuesday, January 7.
Up to 3cm of snow per hour is expected in the southwest on Sunday, moving across the south and tracking northwards with a band of rain following behind. By 3pm on Sunday, snow is forecasted to have moved across Yorkshire, Midlands, East Anglia, Wales, and the Peak District.
According to WX Charts, some 2-3cm looks set to fall over the same regions and as far north as Greater Manchester by midnight on Monday, January 6. A large portion of England and Wales will be blanketed in snow by midday on Monday, extending into southern Scotland. There is also a yellow weather warning for snow issued by the Met Office for Yorkshire.
The far north of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland also look set for snow simultaneously. Rain is predicted for Cornwall, south Wales and parts of southern Britain, although parts of Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex and Kent are likely to see clear skies at midday on January 6.
The band of snow and rain then shifts south-eastwards on Tuesday, clearing across to mainland Europe, though pockets of snow look set to affect parts of the Scottish Highlands, Northumberland, County Durham and Cumbria at midday on January 7. Weather maps from WX Charts show snow affecting coasts in North East England and North Cornwall, over parts of the Peak District and around the north of Scotland at 6pm on the same day, reports the Express.
This weekend is set to be a particularly cold one, with temperatures expected to drop to single figures on Saturday, January 4, and could plummet to as low as -10C in central Scotland by midday on Tuesday, according to WX Charts. The Met Office has indicated that by Thursday (January 2), the entire UK is likely to experience a shift to colder conditions which will persist into the weekend.
They added: “Wintry showers are expected to affect the far north and east at times, but away from these, sunshine will be much more widespread than in recent days. Overnight temperatures will widely fall below freezing, perhaps reaching minus double digits in areas of Scotland already covered in snow.”

The forecaster also warns that snow and ice are “likely” to cause some travel disruption and challenging driving conditions on New Year’s Day until January 2 in parts of northern Scotland.
The Met Office UK five-day weather forecast suggests that much of England and Wales will see wet and windy conditions on New Year’s Day, although it should turn drier later. Northern Ireland and Scotland can expect colder weather with a mix of sunshine and wintry showers moving southward.
Tonight, rain in the far south will clear, leading to colder, clearer conditions for everyone. Wintry showers will continue around northern coasts, while frost, fog, and icy patches are expected to form.
Thursday promises to be a cold but mostly sunny day for many, with wintry showers affecting northern and eastern coasts. It will be breezy in the east, but elsewhere winds should remain light.
The forecast for Friday through to Sunday predicts mostly cold but sunny weather, with wintry showers largely limited to coastal areas. Northern regions may experience sporadic rain, sleet, and snow on Saturday, while the south can expect rain on Sunday.
