While we may have had a very mild Christmas Day this year, New Year’s Day is set to see snow falling across Yorkshire.
According to weather maps by WXCharts, the snow is expected to quickly move down from Scotland on New Year’s Day, before blanketing the entire region. This will follow rainfall on the day as well.
The map shows snow falling in the Scottish Highlands at around 9pm on New Year’s Eve, before it moves south overnight. By 9am on New Year’s Day, this will have reached Yorkshire, with snow falling in parts of North Yorkshire and in the furthest west regions.
There will be around 2cm an hour falling at this time.

At midday, the snow will spread to major cities like Bradford, Leeds and York as well as major centres like Huddersfield, with up to 5cm an hour falling in parts of North Yorkshire. This is expected to continue into the afternoon.

By 3pm, the snow will be continuing over the region, with up to 5-10cm falling across much of the county. This will again continue into the evening.
Then, at 9pm, the snow will move south while continuing to cover the northern regions of Yorkshire. At this time, Sheffield and Doncaster will find themselves hit by the snow, with up to 3-5cm falling.
This is then expected to cease by the early hours of January 2.

A snow warning from the Met Office is in place from 9am on New Year’s Day until 3am on January 2. This covers all of Yorkshire except the coast.
The Met Office said: “A band of rain in association with a deep low pressure system moving in from the west pushes east on Wednesday. This is likely to turn to snow as it moves into cold air across the northern half of the UK. 2-5 cm and locally nearer 10 cm of snow accumulations are possible widely, with 10-15 cm and locally 20-25 cm over hills with significant drifting due to strong winds.”
