Warning issued for anyone who is taking part in Dry January this month

An urgent warning has been issued to anyone giving up alcohol as part of Dry January. More and more people are turning to Dry January and staving off alcohol completely in January in the wake of Christmas, but experts are warning it could backfire.

Experts have warned against the cold turkey method, while others have said ditching booze for a full month has risks. Rupa Parmar, Director of Midland Health said: “Although taking a break from alcohol can be a great way to improve health and reset habits, going alcohol-free can be risky for those who are dependent on drinking.

“For many regular drinkers, suddenly stopping alcohol may lead to withdrawal symptoms, some of which can be severe or even life-threatening. Symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS) range from mild anxiety and headaches to serious complications like seizures.

“People need to know that if they drink most days or in large amounts, they may experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop. These include shaking, sweating and even trouble sleeping. In severe cases, withdrawal can lead to seizures or hallucinations that require emergency medical care.”

Doctor Jamie Winn warned: “Quitting alcohol ‘cold turkey’ is also not advised for those who may be suffering from alcohol dependency. This can lead to withdrawal symptoms, health complications, and psychological distress.

“In these cases, alcohol reduction should take place gradually under medical care. If you’re concerned about your alcohol consumption’s impact on your health, seek personalized advice from a healthcare professional who can guide you through your options.”

But other added: “Step away for a month and you could welcome improved mental clarity, better focus, and heightened productivity.” That advice came from Universal Drugstore as the experts and health gurus delved into the 10 biggest impacts Dry January has on your body during the first month of the year.
