A warning has been issued to UK households who put a common ingredient in air fryers. UK homes who use an air fryer for their recipes in the wake of Christmas have been warned to avoid using cheese in the tech appliances and devices.
Another snack that falls foul to air fryer’s modern heating method, cheese will be heated up at a different speed to the rest of the dish, experts warn – potentially resulting in a “huge gooey mess”, according to experts, who’ve issued a warning.
Speaking to CookingLight, registered dietitian Ilyse Schapiro suggests going for cheeses that are known for staying firm, even when cooked. “Try halloumi,” she said, in a piece of advice which has been echoed by Tom’s Guide.

Tom’s Guide points out that frozen cheeses like mozzarella sticks will be less likely to burn as the air fryer works its magic. And both halloumi and mozzarella are typically considered among the healthier types of cheese out there, per GoodtoKnow, which is an added bonus.
Other foodstuffs to avoid in air fryers include shellfish – from prawns to crab and beyond – as well as leafy greens, and meat on the bone. The meat may not be cooked all the way through and no one wants to be left unsure of what’s safe to eat and what’s not.
Sauce, batter, breaded items and battered foods are also a risk, alongside popcorn and uncooked grains. Well-cooked beef burgers and baked goods are another example of what to avoid as we head through the calendar year, experts say.
Tasting Table, meanwhile, has also issued a warning. “Air frying cheese is doable, but messy — and if you pick the right cheeses, it might even end up being a healthy treat after all,” the site wrote to air fryer fans.
