‘We built an igloo near Bolton and celebrated with bacon butties’

Just outside of Bolton is probably the last place you’d ever expect to see an igloo.

But two brothers managed to make it happen at a popular beauty spot following the cold snap earlier this month.

Jordan Hilton and his brother Liam decided to take on the challenge at Rivington Pike in Chorley on Sunday (January 12).

The 34-year-old got the idea to build the snow house after going for a camping trip with his girlfriend the night before.

Realising how much snow had settled on the hills, Jordan, who lives in Horwich, decided to hike back up the popular spot the next morning to build an igloo.

The challenge took the pair six hours to complete, finishing the mission with celebratory bacon and sausage butties.

Jordan, who documented the task on his Instagram and YouTube accounts, told the Manchester Evening News: “Me and my girlfriend went up and took a tent up there the night before and cooked our tea.

“[The snow] was up to our knees. I said, ‘There’s enough snow up there to make an igloo.’

“We joked, and I said, ‘I’m coming back tomorrow to do it.’

“We brought some cooking stuff. It took five to six hours to finish. It was mint; we did it.

“It was mad; it took that long to make. We were tired but we had a coffee and a butty inside, laughed our heads off and said, ‘Shall we go?’

“With me, I build loads of different things and film it all. I find it mad; the process is better than the end result.

“I enjoyed doing it, but I spent six hours doing it and five minutes inside and then we went. If I didn’t have work the next day, I would have been up there all day.

An igloo, also known as a snow house or snow hut, is a type of shelter traditionally built by the Inuit people of the Arctic regions including Canada, Alaska and Greenland.

They are made entirely out of compacted snow which acts as an insulator to retain warmth inside even in extremely cold conditions.

Dad-of-one Jordan says he put the creation together using buckets and a spade. “All we. “We filled buckets with snow and put them in a line, building them on top of each other,” he added.

“I always film everything and I put it on my page. I thought, ‘Right, I’ll put it on,’ and people loved it.

“The maddest part is, I’ve got Insta and TikTok and it’s blown up a bit on there, but Facebook – what I’ve sussed is it’s resonating with the older generation.

“They’ve been tagging their friends saying, ‘Remember when we did this?’”
