Two doctors have shared valuable advice on their YouTube channel about the best way to bolster immunity against seasonal illnesses, which have seen a surge in recent times. Doctors Paul Zalzal and Brad Weening assert that maintaining gut health is pivotal to fighting off infections.
They particularly highlighted the significance of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) in safeguarding our health during the chillier months. Dr. Weening elaborated by stating: “There is healthy bacteria in your gut that help control your body’s level of inflammation, body’s ability to fight infection so it’s this lymphoid tissue that lives inside of our gut that is responsible for 70 to 80 per cent of your immunity.”
Dr. Zalzal chimed in to support this viewpoint, noting: “It makes sense because if you think about it, it’s very hard for bacteria to get to my kidney or my heart or one of my many internal organs.
“The gut however is exposed to all these bacteria because you’re putting all these bacteria in your mouth to eat, the food you eat isn’t sterile it has bacteria on it so that’ why the gut is most prepared to fight off bacteria.”

However, a study by Megan R Ruth and Catherine J Field published in the Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology highlights a specific way to enhance GALT function: “There is considerable support that in health and stressed conditions oral ingestion of arginine (0.6% to 2% w/w) has a beneficial effect on GALT, with particular improvements in aspects of the acquired immune response,” reports Surrey Live.
