When are Bank Holidays in 2025? Government weighs up dates for extra day off

Brits have already enjoyed their first bank holiday of 2025 with New Year’s Day falling on Wednesday.

It was the first of eight public holidays that will be happening this year in England and Wales with others to be enjoyed in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Contrary to previous reports, these standard dates are the only ones that will be given. It had been suggested back in November that extra dates were being put aside to mark 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day in 1945.

This idea had been put forward in an article in the Express that said that bank holidays in May and August were being considered. Instead the government has put aside £10m to celebrate the anniversary on existing days off.

“We are committed to commemorating these nationally important occasions appropriately which is why we have announced more than £10m to mark them.”

For the upcoming year, England and Wales is currently down to enjoy a total of eight scheduled public holidays.

  • St. Andrew’s Day (substitute day): December 1

St Andrew’s Day (November 30) falls on a Sunday in 2025, so the substitute bank holiday is observed on the following Monday, December 1.
