Who is Rob Donovan on Coronation Street amid return and why is he in prison?

Coronation Street will be airing villain Rob Donovan’s explosive return on Thursday night.

Only recently, Carla Connor was rushed to hospital and she has been left devastated to hear that the damage to her kidney is severe and she’ll need a transplant.

In upcoming scenes on Thursday night’s episode, 9 January, Carla’s nephew Ryan Connor tells his aunt that if he’s a match, he’d like to donate a kidney but she won’t hear of it.

However, Carla is soon left distracted when she realises her other nephew, Bobby Crawford, is missing and she wonders where he has gone.

It is soon revealed that Bobby has headed to Highfield Prison to visit his dad and Carla’s brother, Rob. Things take a dramatic turn when Rob learns Bobby has come to persuade him to donate a kidney to Carla. How will he react?

Longtime soap watchers will remember Rob, played by Marc Baylis, on the ITV soap but for new viewers here’s a refresher.

Rob made his first appearance on the cobbles back in 2012 and is the estranged brother of Carla. He is currently serving a life sentence for the 2014 murder of Tina McIntyre, played by Michelle Keegan.

Rob killed Tina back in 2014 just after getting engaged to Tracy Barlow. Rob chased Tina onto the balcony of the Builder’s Yard in a bid to prevent her from telling the police about his dodgy dealings.

When she tried to leave, he pushed her and she fell off the roof, with Rob convinced he killed her. With Tina still alive, he attacked her with an iron bar but she survived that attack and was rushed to hospital as doctors tried to save her but she tragically died.

Ahead of his wedding to Tracy, Rob confessed to a suspicious Carla about murdering Tina after she grilled him. In a dramatic twist, on Rob and Tracy’s wedding day, it was revealed that Carla had reported Rob to the police and he went on the run.

Actor Marc – who played Rob – departed his role soon after when Rob was jailed for Tina’s murder. Explaining his character’s decision to kill Tina, Marc said of what happened on screen: “It is an accident – that wasn’t his motive when he went into the flat.

“He’s protecting his family… It happens as an accident. It’s not a black and white storyline, there’s a lot of grey areas. When Rob’s back is against the wall that’s when he’ll do an act that, from his point of view, is protection.”

Coronation Street is on ITV1 at 8pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on ITV X and STV.
