Former president Barack Obama is still anticipated to attend the official swearing-in event.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are also among the other well-known individuals who aren’t set to be attending the January 20 ceremony.
Ms Obama was also notably absent at Jimmy Carter’s state funeral last week, but CNN reported this was due to a “scheduling conflict” and she remained in Hawaii, where she had been on an “extended vacation”.
Crystal Carson, a spokesperson for Ms Obama, said in a statement to Politico: “Ms Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former president.”
Why is Michelle Obama missing Donald Trump’s inauguration?
Ms Obama’s office provided no explanation for her planned absence from the event at the US Capitol but the former first lady’s choice may have been influenced by a number of reasons.
In the past two elections, the Obamas helped run a vigorous campaign against Mr Trump.
She added: “His limited narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by two hardworking, successful people who happened to be Black.”
Ms Obama’s contempt for Mr Trump is widely known. People reported a source that said, “There’s no overstating her feelings about [Trump]. She’s not one to plaster on a pleasant face and pretend, for protocol’s sake.”
According to a source who spoke to Page Six, Ms Obama has no plans to improve her relationship with Mr Trump. “She’s never been fake and she’s never been phony” the source revealed.
That said, Mr Obama and Mr Trump appeared to be on friendly terms during Mr Carter’s funeral last week.
According to NBC, Mr Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last week, “I didn’t realise how friendly it looked.
“I said, ‘Boy, they look like two people that like each other.’ And we probably do.”
But these rumours were put to rest when Ms Obama thanked her husband for “always having my back, being by my side, and finding ways to make me smile” on X on their 32nd wedding anniversary.
