Why your Winter Fuel Payment hasn’t arrived despite freezing weather

Millions of pensioners are up to £300 worse off this winter after having a crucial Government support payment removed. Despite icy conditions currently gripping the UK, which have seen temperatures plummet as far as -20C, many have had support for their heating bills taken away.

It’s known as the Winter Fuel Payment and is worth up to £300. It was previously paid to all pensioners but is now given to the very poorest – those who get Pension Credit. That doesn’t include around two million on low incomes who are now having to cope without the support during sub-zero temperatures.

The current weather is likely to have increased anxieties for people on low incomes about how long they should leave their heating on for amid spiralling costs. The cold snap comes just as energy bills were increased again in January, piling on the misery for hard-up Brits.

Pensioners would normally have expected to see the Winter Fuel Payment drop into their bank accounts around Christmas time. Only around 1.5 million have received it this winter, down from 10 million, following a decision which left the Government facing a huge backlash and accusations of cruelty.

The new Winter Fuel Payment rules are expected to remain in place for 2025/26. While the most financially comfortable pensioners can cope without the top-up, others desperately rely on it.

The charity Age UK said: “We strongly oppose the cut to the Winter Fuel Payment that means only those receiving Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits will receive it. This will leave millions of struggling pensioners without money they rely on. 2.5 million pensioners who badly need the money to stay warm this winter will not receive it and will be in serious trouble as a result.”
