Willem Dafoe shares his daily exercise routine to help maintain his health

Renowned actor Willem Dafoe has shared his daily health routine in a chat with Louis Theroux, revealing that he practices a form of yoga known as ‘Ashtanga’ every day.

The 69-year-old screen star explained: “I do Ashtanga (yoga) practice, that’s the different postures you do in the standard yoga practice.”

He elaborated on his commitment to the discipline, stating that he devotes an hour each day to the practice six days a week and that in the past he practised Vedanta, another type of yoga.

In terms of physical changes, he noted to Yoga Journal: “As I get older, ashtanga is very useful for health and peace of mind, obviously,” and shared his observations about the shifts in his abilities: “In certain things, I am not as strong, as flexible as I once was, just superficially. But other things, I am actually better at, you know? Like breathing, for example. I am better in touch with my breath.”

Describing Ashtanga, Ekhart Yoga states it involves students following “a set sequence of postures each time, gradually progressing through the series. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga emphasises the linking of movement and breath (vinyasa), Ujjayi breathing and bandhas (energy locks).”

Additionally, in his conversation with Theroux, Dafoe expressed his passion for acting: “When you’re working that structure I enjoy, it’s a way to apply myself,” reports Surrey Live.

He commented: “Certain things start taking care of (themselves). I don’t have to worry about the little things, you know, I have to worry about what I do.”

The highly acclaimed actor has been in a plethora of high-profile movies throughout his illustrious career. His performances have graced such notable titles as Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and the cult classic American Psycho where he starred alongside the likes of Christian Bale and Patrick Bateman.

Over the years, Dafoe’s work has brought him a string of nominations, recognising his immense contribution to the film industry, dating back to one of his early successes with the film Platoon, which emerged in 1986.
