Wizz Air expects to return to growth in 2026 as it strikes engine deal

Wizz Air is gearing up for a growth spurt in 2026, following the announcement of a two-year support and compensation deal with engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney due to aircraft groundings. The budget airline, listed on the FTSE 250, anticipates that around 40 of its Airbus A320neo planes will remain grounded until the 2025-26 period for necessary engine inspections by the American aerospace company.

Despite this setback, which saw operating profits drop by a third to €349.2 million as reported in last month’s half-year results, Wizz Air has secured both operational support and a compensation package from Pratt & Whitney to cover direct costs incurred from the grounding. The Hungarian carrier has been hit hard by the need to ground its Airbus fleet for engine checks but remains optimistic about bouncing back in the 2025-26 financial year, thanks to proactive measures and an order for 50 new Airbus A321neo aircraft set for delivery in the same period, expected to boost its flight offerings by 20%.

Wizz Air commented: “The company continues to take proactive action to mitigate the financial and operational impact of the grounded aircraft and will continue to work with Pratt & Whitney to ensure that aircraft are returned to operation as soon as possible.”
