A woman was seen doing YOGA in the middle of the A555 near Manchester Airport, which is still shut due to severe flooding on New Year’s Day.
The typically busy Manchester Airport relief road remained under water on Thursday morning (January 2), and was likened to a ‘lake’, with vehicles still trapped and submerged under flood waters.
The road was completely closed off on New Year’s Day after it became flooded following a night of heavy rainfall. Images from the scene showed cars completely submerged on the airport relief road between Hazel Grove and the airport, near Cheadle.

Pictures taken by a walker shortly after midday on Thursday afternoon, with the road still closed off, showed a woman doing yoga in the middle of the carriageway.
Taken by David Vaughan, who was out with his daughter, he said: “It was on the A555, just below Little Acorns nursery in Heald Green.

“I went out for a walk with my daughter and we thought we would take a look at the ‘lake’ under the bridge on the A555. We saw a coloured blob moving on the carriageway and at first, we thought it was a large bird.
“When we got closer, we could see it was a lady practising yoga, and definitely an expert. I thought… good for her. It will be something to tell her kids in the future.”
It’s believed five vehicles have been stranded under the A555 bridge, with just the roofs visible above the water. Police were also called out to rescue people from a car in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The A555 road in Greater Manchester runs along its southern border with Cheshire. It is officially known as the Manchester Airport Eastern Link and runs between Manchester Airport and the A6 south of Hazel Grove in Stockport.
An independent investigation into the disastrous floods that hit Stockport in the summer of 2019 previously revealed that ‘design shortcomings’ meant the road would ‘remain vulnerable to flooding from prolonged or frequent heavy rainfall’.
The A555 flooded a number of times in 2019, and was closed again in January 2021 and January 2023 following heavy rain.
Leader of Stockport Council Cllr Mark Hunter, said: “Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of residents during this challenging time. Teams are working around the clock alongside emergency services to assist those affected and to clear roads as quickly as possible.
“Please take care on the roads, avoid flooded areas, and travel cautiously. Thank you for your cooperation as we manage this ongoing situation.”
