Yorkshire flood warnings live as public told to ‘stay away’ from beaches

Flood warnings have been issued across Scarborough.

The Environment Agency has issued two flood warnings for the North Sea, at the Foreshore Road and Sandside areas. High tides and strong winds are expected to occur from about 3.45pm to 7.45pm.

People have been told to ‘stay away’ from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads. This comes as a yellow weather warning for high speed winds is in place today (December 31) until 11pm.

There is also a flood alert issued between Whitby to Filey and a yellow weather warning for rain for parts of Yorkshire from 3pm until 11pm. A North Yorkshire Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Coastal flood warnings issued.

“The Environment Agency have issued two flood warnings for Scarborough this afternoon / evening and a flood alert for the coast between Whitby and Filey.

“Please stay safe out there and stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads in Scarborough and be cautious along the rest of the coast. Large waves and spray are dangerous.”

On Foreshore Road, the Environment Agency said: “High tides and strong winds are expected to cause large waves and spray, and are forecast to affect Foreshore Road today, on December 31, between 3.45pm and 7.45pm. Areas most at risk include properties on Foreshore Road from the roundabout to West Pier. After the high tide today‚ the weather is more settled and no further flooding is expected. We are closely monitoring the situation and will re-issue this message if required.

“Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads in Scarborough as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.”

On Sandside, the agency said: “High tides and strong winds may cause large waves and spray overtopping on the coast today, on December 31, between 4.45pm and 7.45pm. Areas most at risk include properties on Sandside around the old harbour. After the high tide today‚ the weather is more settled and no further flooding is expected. We will continue to monitor the situation closely. Please avoid walking, cycling or driving through areas where waves are overtopping.”
