Carrots are a staple in many people’s grocery hauls, known for their long shelf life. Yet, it can be frustrating to purchase fresh veggies only to find them mouldy or slimy after a short time.
This could be due to various factors, including improper storage. Nutritionist coach and cook, Amanda Rocchio, took to social media to share the “proper way” to store this essential vegetable.
In a TikTok video, Amanda revealed: “You’ve probably been storing your carrots the wrong way, let me show you the right thing to do. Whether you prefer to buy whole carrots or prefer to grab a bag of baby carrots, you’re probably tossing them in a fridge drawer.”

However, the expert suggests that the best method to keep carrots crisp and fresh is to remove them from their packaging and place them in a container filled with water. She advised to then put the container in the middle of the fridge, reports the Express.
Amanda explained: “The key is to place them in a container and fill it up with water. They can last four weeks this way.”
It’s recommended to store the carrots in a lidded jar or container to prevent exposure to fridge moisture, which can lead to spoilage. Regularly changing the water every five or six days will also help maintain the freshness of the carrots.
This technique is said to extend the shelf life of carrots for “months”, helping to reduce food waste and save money on groceries.
The regular opening of a fridge drawer can cause temperature fluctuations that affect the produce inside. It’s crucial to peel vegetables before immersing them in water to prevent oxidation.
This also saves time when preparing meals as the vegetables are already prepped. Other veggies that can be kept fresh in water include celery, lettuce, and potatoes.
